Hi I am Emily Morris, but you can call me Coach E. I started this business called The Shoe Bus, Mobile Fitness Boutique and then another called BoVega with my hub Jake, you can call him Flocka. I would say it’s pretty rad. He, myself and Bella do mobile workouts and sell fitness gear around the Triad out of Bella. Bella is a 1977 VW Camper Van and she’s my darling baby-babe. I love her like a child. The Shoe Bus was created to build a happier and healthier community in the Triad through fitness and food. We are people in the business of building community because we strongly value the idea of #Bettertogether.
Why TSB Blog?
I am writing this blog to provide readers with the TRUEST and RAWEST information about holistic wellness while more importantly debunking myths that surround this genre of life. Improving your health does not, by any means, mean that you have to be perfect ANY of the time. Optimal health means that you feel good in your body, both the way it looks but also the way it functions. You want to wake up ready for the day and you want to go to sleep feeling fulfilled, not like you didn’t accomplish anything.
Things we will chat about in this blog are:
-Exercise of all kinds, how you should do it, what are the right types and how long?
-Exercise routines that will kick the booty into shape!
-Holistic mental health, things we can do to promote happy skulls.
-Holistic eating, I will spend a lot of time here. Facts, recipe posts, and debunking myths!
-Wellness in your sleep habits
-Tips and tricks that I have found along the way.
****One thing to know about me is I am a talkerrrrrrrrrr. I like the words if ya’ know what I mean. But I read a bunch of blogs about how to write a blog and they all told me I had to be quick, so fine. I’ll TRY to be short.
Mostly I have a lot of fitness knowledge in my noggin’ that I love to share with folks. So bear with me, these posts may take a while to get jumping but let me reassure you, you will always be getting me, the real me. Never fake, never false, always the truth even if it is something I may not agree with. I am going to give you the world of health through a holistic lens. You, as a human with their own mind and own set of opinions and thoughts, make your own judgement on things. I am here to give you the facts, and provide stories of things that have worked for my clients and me…. THAT’S.IT. So let’s get into it.
Better Together: Why This is My Philosophy—And Why It Should Be Yours, Too
Why the title Better Together for this first blog post? Well, because we are just better when we are together. From the dawn of creation, however you perceive that event to have happened, living things have survived by forming communities, packs, herds and tribes. We are not meant to do anything alone, not live, not eat, not love. We as living, breathing beings were meant to complete life with a group. This theory applies to both the human and animal kingdoms. The size of this group does not typically matter, as long as the “security in numbers” theory is moving alone, so will mankind….and animal kind, every kind. Even the fishes, squid and lobster live in sea pods. At the deepest, darkest grounds of the ocean to the highest clouds in the sky, everything that eats, lives and breathes, does it with something else!
Back to us and fitness and food, I want to chat about why you are here, I want you to get intimate with yourself for a minute here. I want you to become completely aware of how you can be crushing your goals while withstanding the storms as they pass. What will help you get there, or more prominent who will help you get there? Today’s blog is reasons and ways at which the #BetterTogether moto works and has been proven to be successful even for the “I work out best alone” fella. We all need others and today I will be your bestest friend on the subject. Here’s what we will cover:
Four reasons for #BetterTogether: Blood, Energy + Sustainability, Accountability
-Blood
-Energy + Sustainability
-Accountability
-Find a group
Blood
Have you ever been on a treadmill or a stationary bike and you are exercising for sure, but where is your mind? Is it also there on the machine with you or has it drifted? Has it gone back to the sass the car in front of you gave you earlier today or to the conversation you had with your mother this morning or to you to do list you are compiling for later? Mental drifting while exercising can be detrimental to what you are actually trying to accomplish. You drift to yesterday and all of a sudden some of the blood flow rushes back to your brain. Your body sends blood to the muscles that are being used at that moment, if one of those muscles is your brain, science tells us that your blood will rush back there and leave the muscle at work. Meaning your muscles are not being provided with enough blood i.e. making them more tired i.e. making it easier for you to say “that’s enough”. When we don’t allow our brain to drift, when the mind stays completely focused on the task at hand, which probably looks like “Go! Go! You can do this! Push harder!”, our blood stays where it’s supposed to and we can exercise longer.
There is scientific evidence proving that when we are in a group, pushing it to the limits together, we stay at it longer. One study found that 95% of weight loss programs have been completed if a friend is going through it too! We tend to think more about our friend or about the room of people, maybe even some competition, rather than how bad It hurts or what we have to buy at Walgreens later.
Energy + Sustainability
Remember when we were in grade school and everything was about our friends and being with them all the time? Even if that meant sweating it out on the soccer field or track. Friendship, or relationship especially close intimate ones, create endorphins in our body. These energy creating endorphins give our body a certain sensation of happiness when we see our friends, when we laugh over something silly one of us did, and when we feel at ease when we look around the room and see familiar faces. When we workout alone we aren’t making these endorphins, which means no energy. Yea we can chug a coffee or (please don’t ever) an energy drink, to try and wake the body up. And yes that night work. But from a holistic wellness standpoint, our body makes what we need naturally if we treat it correctly. Not to mention you would want to conquer your workout not just struggle through it. We need to design our fitness plan around sustainability and I promise you energy drinks are not going to make your body happy for years. Friends, groups provide energy, the naturally inspiring way! #Getsome
Accountability
My track and cross country coaches in college where some of my best friends, but they weren’t afraid to lay the hammer down… and hard! I can still remember the ONE practice I was missed (yes, I was hungover, I was in college give me a break!). I remember like it was yesterday, walking up to coach later with my tail between my legs and my head downnnnnnnnnn. I made it through high school and college competitive distance running with zero help from myself and all the help from my coaches and my team mates. I hold a few records from then and still run these days but have never, and I mean EVER been back to the speed I was in college. Of course, some of that is natural but some of it is because I don’t have the accountability I used to. No one is waiting for me or expecting me. This makes it easier for me to listen to my lazy brain and say “no, don’t go!” An accountability partner or a group of them will help you stay the course! You’re with your friend and that makes it all the while worth it!
Group Work
Finding a group to workout with now-a-days has never been easier. You can join a meet up group at meetup.com and easily find a group that is actually interested in the same type of workout out as you. They are also relatively safe groups to join on your own, if that’s something you are worried about. Also they are usually pretty welcoming to new comers, very low cost if anything at all as well. Running/walking groups are also easy to join. An simple way to find a group in your area is to follow this link; https://www.rrca.org/resources/runners/find-a-running-club. Another easy way is to go into your local running store. Cough, cough- The Shoe Bus! And ask them!! Because we are engulfed in it, most running gurus know where the best store in your city may lie. The last way, if fitness is your thing, is to join a class based gym. To my Triad readers, keep your eyes out for this type of gym atmosphere coming from The Shoe Bus. It’s going to be epic!
You have come to the end of the first ever TSB Blog Post. I hope you found this enlightening and organic. I love and honor each and every one of you. Please comment below and I am always open to Q&As.
